I heard from an old friend today. She called because she had seen something I had written that made her curious. She asked me, “how did you do that?”. How did you launch one business, and start a second business coaching, speaking and writing a book.? She wondered if it might be possible for her to create a new career path that she is passionate about. She asked me, “how can I figure out what I should do next?”
She had been with a company for many years and was bored silly but stayed on because she did not know what else she would do, and she was fearful about making a change. Then she was laid off during a downsizing initiative and took some time to enjoy her family. Finally she was able to get a job working for an old customer she had a relationship with from her old job. It appeared to be a great opportunity but she wants more.
She is at a crossroads which many of us find ourselves at in our lives. We feel bored, stuck, idle, like there is something more but we aren’t sure where to find it. Looking at the picture it seems as if a change could be very difficult if not impossible.
My friend, for instance, needs to carry the health insurance for her family, she and her husband have three children under the age of 12, and she needs to make a certain amount of money to maintain their current lifestyle. She is frustrated and knows it is time to do something about her work life but is not sure how to get from point A to point B.
There are 5 Keys that will help anyone move along the path to truly fulfilling work. We have to figure out some things about ourselves, some things about the new career and make some plans to move us along in the right direction. Look at these keys as an adventure into the new and shiny future that awaits you and you will see everything is possible with the right tools.
Key 1 – Passion Fuels Success
Ask yourself what really excites you so much that you would do it all day, every day for free. Name the first three things that come to mind without censoring them. When I was making a major career change, I knew I had to work in design because I could read and study design all day and night and never tire of it. I would look at a space and begin deconstructing it without even thinking about it. I was passionate about design and the fact that it made people’s lives better.
Key 2 – Natural Ability Trumps Experience
In addition to being passionate about something, our natural abilities make certain things come easily to us. For my friend who is a great salesperson, it is natural to socialize, persuade others, and close the deal. In fact, if he is not working on a deal or closing a deal he is unhappy. Sales thrills him and it never gets old, he is always getting better at it. What in your life comes naturally and brings you joy? These are the things that others look at an say, “You make that look so easy.”
Key 3 – Insider Information
Learn about the field of interest or business you want to start. Find people you know or a friend or colleague might know who work in the areas you are passionate about and good at naturally. Ask them to sit down over coffee and tell you what they do. People love to help other people get into professions they are passionate about. Ask questions… Do you need further schooling? What skill sets are important? How do you start in the profession? Find out as much as possible from as many people as you can.
Key 4 – Plan of Action – Take Action
Once you know what it takes to get started in your new profession, put a plan together for your life that can get you there. If you need to save money to cover a pay cut, how much do you need to save? Can you cut living expenses in some way to make ends meet? Take a class to prepare yourself if there is something you need to know more about. Work for free after hours to get experience and learn the ropes. Once you have a plan – you are on your way.
Key 5 – Leap of Faith
Believe you are worth it – you deserve to work in an area that both fulfills you psychologically, spiritually, and pays the bills. You will never leave a steady job until you know within your very core that you are good enough to be a success at your new career. Act as if you know it, until you know it.
Never let yourself think for a second that you are not capable. If you are following your passion and keying in on your natural abilities you are in the no fail zone. When you are networking for that job, or launching your new business, remember your past success is a great indicator of your future success. Except this time you have something more fueling your success.
Passion leads to success every time without fail. Sure you might have a learning curve and you may even make some mistakes along the way. Allow yourself the opportunity to make the world a beautiful place by living your natural abilities in what you do everyday. Not only will you be happy, others will be attracted to you as your passion will shine through. You will be that person whom others call to ask, “how did you do that?”
